John Figel

John has been working with mission-driven organizations since 2013. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Public Affairs, with a focus in Nonprofit Management, from the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University.

Born and raised in Oak Park, Illinois, John has always called the greater Chicago area home. Since completing his undergraduate studies in 2013, John has gained extensive experience in the mission-driven sector. His work in development, corporate communications and community development has cultivated a versatile tool box – an amalgam that has allowed for a wide range of work at several nonprofit institutions, including: IFF, The Oak Park Chamber of Commerce, Green Community Connections, and the Professional Theatre and Dance Youth Academy.

In addition to his commitment to the social sector, John is a writer – spending his free time drafting press pieces for the community-based newspaper Gazette Chicago, submitting opinion editorials concerning local governance and politics, and updating his blog with commentary on current events.

John is also a passionate advocate for social change. For the last two years, he has dedicated many hours (and miles) training and fundraising as a Chicago Marathon charity runner for Erika Lighthouse – an organization dedicated to eliminating the stigma associated with mental illness and educating communities about teen depression.
